Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 01

Day 01: FORGIVEN

SCRIPTURE
Romans 5:12-19 [the Message]
You know the story of how Adam landed us in the dilemma we’re in—first sin, then death, and no one exempt from either sin or death. That sin disturbed relations with God in everything and everyone, but the extent of the disturbance was not clear until God spelled it out in detail to Moses. So death, this huge abyss separating us from God, dominated the landscape from Adam to Moses. Even those who didn’t sin precisely as Adam did by disobeying a specific command of God still had to experience this termination of life, this separation from God. But Adam, who got us into this, also points ahead to the One who will get us out of it.

Yet the rescuing gift is not exactly parallel to the death-dealing sin. If one man’s sin put crowds of people at the dead-end abyss of separation from God, just think what God’s gift poured through one man, Jesus Christ, will do! There’s no comparison between that death-dealing sin and this generous, life-giving gift. The verdict on that one sin was the death sentence; the verdict on the many sins that followed was this wonderful life sentence. If death got the upper hand through one man’s wrongdoing, can you imagine the breathtaking recovery life makes, sovereign life, in those who grasp with both hands this wildly extravagant life-gift, this grand setting-everything-right, that the one man Jesus Christ provides?

Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right.

PRAYER
Lord, Thank you so much that you paid the ultimate sacrifice for me. Thank you for paying the ultimate sacrifice for my sins, for my debt. Not just me but the entire world. It's unimaginable to me that there is nothing I could do that would make you love me less. Help me to accept the reality of this forgiveness and walk in truth because of it, as a believer in pursuit of my reborn self--a reflection of Christ. Give me your eyes for others as I walk through this week, seeing them as the spotless creations you intended them to be. Where I may be impatient with my coworkers or family, give me your loving kindness and grace for them. Help me to seek you in all of my interactions and help me to love others out of the overflow of your forgiveness.

NEXT STEPS
Search your heart: Where in your life have you not fully accepted the reality of Christ's forgiveness? Is this perhaps hindering you from rising above a stronghold or sin in your life?

Ask yourself the question: Is there anyone in my life  I view as "too far gone" or "unsavable"? Why or why not? Spend some time praying on their behalf. What practical steps can you take to overcome that barrier and be a conduit of Christ's forgiveness in their life?

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 02

Day 02: SIN

SCRIPTURE
James 4: 1-12
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.  When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us. But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

PRAYER
Litany of Penitence: Taken from the Common Book of Prayer

Most holy and merciful Father:
We confess to you and to one another,
and to the whole communion of saints
in heaven and on earth,
that we have sinned by our own fault
in thought, word, and deed;
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us.
We have not been true to the mind of Christ.
We have grieved your Holy Spirit.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us,
We confess to you, Lord.
Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of concern for those who come after us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us;
Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great.
Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,
That we may show forth your glory in the world.
By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,
Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.

RESPONSE
Today, write down a scripture or quote that embodies the grace and mercy we’ve been given. Write down something that points to what Jesus did for us on the cross and what that means for our life.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 03

Day 03: SERVANT

SCRIPTURE
Philippians 2:3-11
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his
   own advantage;
   rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
   being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
   he humbled himself
   by becoming obedient to death—
   even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

PRAYER
God give me the desire to see outside myself. Help me to set aside my own wants in exchange for considering others needs. You've given me example after example of what being a servant looks like. You sent Jesus to the world, so I can be more like him. Grant me an attitude that reflects Christ's heart of service. Cultivate in me a heart of humility, I want to be your servant in my everyday life. Allow me to see and respond to the tangible ways I can serve others around me.

RESPONSE
Take a moment to try to connect with a neighbor that you don't know. Ask God to show you if they have any needs that you could help meet or pray for. Maybe it's as simple as watering their yard while they're out of town or helping them rake leaves, maybe it will go deeper. Then, prayerfully consider ways that you can serve with your local church or community in a new way.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 04

Day 04: LOST

SCRIPTURE
Luke 15:1-7
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

PRAYER
Lord, I am lost. I have wandered away from you. I can't find my way home.  But you found me. You searched for me and found me. Lord, I repent. Let me be found in you. Teach me to love others as you have loved me. Help me to partner with you, to seek out the lost sheep.

NEXT STEPS
Write down your Jesus story. It's easy to forget where we came from. Think about the details of when you first heard about Jesus, when did you accept Him into your life. What did it take to get you to this point in your life. When we think about our story and parallel it to the lost sheep, our hearts begin to soften and grow immensely for the people around us who might be struggling or don't yet know Jesus.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 05

Day 05: GROWTH

SCRIPTURE
James 1:2-4 (NLT)
Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

PRAYER
Father, thank you for placing me in situations and circumstances that allow me to grow. Please open my eyes to all the ways you are trying to stretch me each and every day. Help me see how you are orchestrating every situation so that I can become more and more like you. Attune my eyes to see the blessings of this moment, even when the season is difficult and the growing pains tear at my heart.  Transform me into someone who looks, acts, and loves like you. Give me the wisdom and the grace to accept trials as a catalyst for growth. You encourage me out of my comfort zone and give me the fervor to not live in a state of stagnancy or complacency. Thank you for loving me so much and showing me your hand in every area of my life.

NEXT STEPS
Take time today to journal or write down a few ways that you feel God is currently trying to grow you. If nothing comes to mind, ask God to highlight how He is moving within a difficult situation in your life. Ask Him what He's trying to teach you through that discomfort and what might be transformed within you as a result. Don't get overwhelmed by the big picture, once you have identified a few areas where God is growing you (and only pick a few!) list one additional step that would help you lean into the growth. Perhaps He is trying to grow you in thankfulness. If that's the case, start a gratitude journal and make a goal to find three things a day to be thankful for. Start small and build from there.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 06

Day 06: TRUTH

SCRIPTURE
John 17:6-19
"I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.  Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.  For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

PRAYER
God will you sanctify me by your word, will you open my eyes and my ears to hear YOUR voice. May I follow the truths that you’ve set before me. Please let those truths guide me while I seek you in everything. Would you give me revelation into the mysteries of heaven, so that I may gain wisdom to spread truth into this world. I pray that the Holy Spirit continuously guides me when I speak your name to others. God would Your words be the only place I put my trust, so that my foundation may be pure and secure from this world’s falsehoods.

RESPONSE
Spend some time reflecting/ meditating on His truth, thinking about what it means to not be of this world. What does that look like in your day-to-day. Allow time for God to speak beyond the scriptures. What is He speaking to you directly?

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 07

Day 07: STILLNESS

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength,
   an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.

PRAYER
God, give me the strength to calm the chaos in my mind. Help me to cease the checklists running through my head and the conversations that I continue to play over and over. You are a God of peace and the protector of my heart. I want to give you what is already yours. I want to surrender time to You and allow You the space that I have taken for granted. I long for you to truly work through me. I want to hear you in the stillness and only you.

NEXT STEPS
Take this day to intentionally set aside a time to be still and rest from your normal chaos. Separate yourself from distractions. Maybe go on a walk or hike, sit at a coffee shop or restaurant. Maybe you need to sit in a quiet room and close the blinds. If you have the capacity, day retreats are great. Everyone is different and has different needs. After you set aside this time, journal after and see what God was trying to tell or show you. Be intentional and hopefully you can add this to your process more often.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 08

Day 08: SORROW

SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 53:3
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

PRAYER
God of all consolation, in your unending love and mercy for us, you turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life. Show compassion to your people in sorrow.  Be our refuge and our strength to lift us from the darkness of this grief to peace and joy in your presence. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen

NEXT STEPS
Dealing with sorrow is never easy, the same goes for watching someone go through a tough time. It hits us when we least expect it. And the truth is, there is no timeline or right formula that works to make us (or others) joyful again. What can we do as Christians during someone's time of need? The Bible says in Mark 12:14-15, "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position..."

Take some time today and think about what you need during times of sorrow. After, spend some time jotting down  notes and ideas about what you can do during someone's time of need. At the end of this, pray and ask God if there is someone that you need to be reaching out to. Be willing to sacrifice your time, God might be calling you to what may seem like the smallest act but He can use all things.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 09

Day 09: CONSUMERISM

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

PRAYER
God, Open our eyes to the subtle pervasiveness of consumerism, that we might see our culture, the Church, and ourselves as you truly see us when we are stripped away of status and things. Remind us that you are the one we can come to for all that we need. Forgive us for seeking comfort in consumerism and greed. Help us to come to you, the giver of life, as the source of hope.

NEXT STEPS
Go through your closet and prune your house, wardrobe, and garage.  Give your excess (clothes and stuff) to someone in need or a charity. Be mindful of this act, don't go out and feel the need to replace your excess.

Lift Off! Road to Renewal - Day 10

Day 10: ANXIETY

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 6:25-34
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

PRAYER
Prayer of Release

"Heavenly Father, I release to You the burdens that I have been carrying, burdens that You never intended for me to carry. I cast all my cares upon You - all my worries, all my fears.  You have told me to not be anxious about anything, but rather to bring everything to You in prayer with thankfulness.

Father, calm my restless spirit, quiet my anxious heart, still my troubling thoughts with the assurance that You are in control. I let go of my grip upon the things I have been hanging onto, with opened hands I come to You. I release to Your will all that I am trying to manipulate; I release to Your authority all that I am trying to control; I release to Your timing all that I have been striving to make happen.

I THANK YOU for Your promises to sustain me, preserve me, and guard all that I have entrusted to You keeping.  Protect my heart and mind with Your peace, the peace that passes all understanding.  Father, may Your will be done in my life, in Your time, and in Your way."

- Roy Lessin

NEXT STEPS
Meditate on the scripture for today, focus on His promises and truths. How much do we truly attempt to carry? Make a list of 3-5 things that are causing you anxiety. Be aware of where your mind wanders. Take those thoughts and anxieties captive, now release them to God.

Lent (2016)

When is Lent ?
Wednesday, February 10, 2016 - Saturday, March 26, 2016

A short history of Lent
Lent is a season of fasting for forty days beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday. Sundays are not including in the 40-day count because the Sundays leading up to Easter are to be recognized as a “mini-Easter” and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. It's a beautiful time to contemplate the cross and the empty tomb.

Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The forty days is representative of Jesus’ time in the wilderness where He fasted for forty days and forty nights to prepare for His ministry. During this time, Jesus was tempted and tested by the devil and He rebuked him. Today, Christians view Lent as a time of repentance, fasting, and preparation for the coming of Easter. We use this season to self-examine and reflect but ultimately to grow closer to God and thank Him for sending his Son to save us of our sins. We do this by disciplining ourselves, usually by giving up something (Chocolate or Coffee, Instagram or Twitter, it's often times the stuff we feel we can't live without, or the elements of life that distract us).

Flight Ministry remember Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection the 10 days leading up to Easter Sunday (March 27) with a special Lift Off! prayer campaign. But until then, please consider a way you could grow closer to God through sacrificing one aspect of your life for discipline or adding something to help you focus more. Here are some devotional plans. Join us in our plan to draw near to God at this important time of remembrance and reflection!
