Lent (2016)

When is Lent ?
Wednesday, February 10, 2016 - Saturday, March 26, 2016

A short history of Lent
Lent is a season of fasting for forty days beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday. Sundays are not including in the 40-day count because the Sundays leading up to Easter are to be recognized as a “mini-Easter” and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. It's a beautiful time to contemplate the cross and the empty tomb.

Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The forty days is representative of Jesus’ time in the wilderness where He fasted for forty days and forty nights to prepare for His ministry. During this time, Jesus was tempted and tested by the devil and He rebuked him. Today, Christians view Lent as a time of repentance, fasting, and preparation for the coming of Easter. We use this season to self-examine and reflect but ultimately to grow closer to God and thank Him for sending his Son to save us of our sins. We do this by disciplining ourselves, usually by giving up something (Chocolate or Coffee, Instagram or Twitter, it's often times the stuff we feel we can't live without, or the elements of life that distract us).

Flight Ministry remember Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection the 10 days leading up to Easter Sunday (March 27) with a special Lift Off! prayer campaign. But until then, please consider a way you could grow closer to God through sacrificing one aspect of your life for discipline or adding something to help you focus more. Here are some devotional plans. Join us in our plan to draw near to God at this important time of remembrance and reflection!
