Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 05

Day 05: Katlyn Cheng
Junior, UC Irvine

Missions Information
July 18-24
Mexico City, Mexico
Organization: Newsong Church (The Well)

How did God lead you to go on this trip?
Mexico is a place that God has constantly placed on my heart throughout my time in college. This year and last year I went to Mexico City with my college fellowship to help out at The Well. The Well is a safe house for young girls who have been human trafficked. Although the two trips were very different in terms of logistics and things we specifically did, God blessed me in so many ways while I was there. It’s such a heart-warming and eye opening experience to talk to these people and get to know them. God has really showed me His love through their pure joy and love for those around them. For this trip specifically, this summer I had nothing planned but I wanted to spend my time this summer doing things for God. I thought about going back to The Well but did not fully believe it was possible. I was still hesitant to this tug that God placed on my heart. When talking to Janice (one of the people in charge of The Well) I saw how open they were to us coming back and the idea all of a sudden became tangible. After weeks of waiting in anticipation for her message to tell us if there was even time available for us to come, she gave us a yes! Having an opportunity to go to Mexico City again this summer is a huge blessing.

What will you be doing on this trip?

Although we don’t know specifically what we are going to do in Mexico City, we will be available to help out in whatever capacity they need. Since they have relocated and recently moved into a new safe house, we will be there to help with various tasks they need completed. The salon used to be a place where women would go to have a bible study under the disguise of it being a salon but now it is being turned into a community center as well. Within the community center they will be teaching cooking classes, dance classes, and any other things that God has placed on their hearts to do to better connect with the community and provide a safe haven for those who are still in the human trafficking cycle. We will probably help out with the transitions there as well. We are going there with the intention of helping and supporting the changes that they are making within the organization while loving on the girls at The Well and showing them God’s love.

What are you looking forward to and what are you apprehensive about?
Some things that I am looking forward to is better connecting with the girls that I have met this past spring and get to know those who are new. I am looking forward to diving into the world that God has created and made in Mexico City. Some things that I am apprehensive about would include communication and safety. Since we are going to a place where the majority language that is spoken there is Spanish, it may cause frustrations and make things a bit more difficult.

How can we pray for you?
Some prayer requests for this trip include safety, courage, communication, and God’s guidance. Mexico City is a location of heavy spiritual warfare. Pray for God’s protection and guidance as we walk around and have encounters with the people there. Pray that through communication bumps and any other difficulties that may arise while being in a foreign country, that we would have patience and get to the places we need to get to. Lastly, pray for courage and boldness that we may step out of our comfort zones if God asks us to do so.
