Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 02

Day 02: Charmaine Yiu
Freshman, UC Santa Barbara

Missions Information
July 1 - 9
Arizona Navajo Reservation
Organization: High School Missionary Team of FCBCLA

July 17-23
East Asia

How did God lead you to go on this trip?
(AZ) Honestly, I can't answer swiftly but I firmly believe in investing time into building relationships so when it comes to short-term missions, this might be achieved through going on the same trip over and over again. (Though it might seem tedious and maybe less adventurous) I want to go to be used by Jesus and to practice that mindset as a lifestyle.

(EA) I've gone with my family on missions to different parts of East Asia for as long as I can remember, which has now become only one of the reasons I go every year. Over the years, I've come to learn that rather than simply spending a week barely getting to know their life stories, being more like Jesus means to value building relationships with these people.

What will you be doing on this trip?
(AZ) This year would be my fourth time going to Arizona and my third time working with the teens class, and I hope to continue spending time with the same group of kids and be blessed by how they are learning and growing up and as individuals. The teens class program unfolds slightly differently from all the other age groups in that we have corporate worship and a message before splitting into small groups, generally divided by age and gender, and ending with crafts and snacks.

(EA) Our team of seven will be hosting a youth camp for high school students to write and perform skits, cook, and make crafts. Following that, we will be hosting a family camp that will essentially be run like our own church's family camps, involving bible study, games, and worship.

What are you looking forward to and what are you apprehensive about?
(AZ) I'm most looking forward to seeing familiar faces (and relearning the family trees) and apprehensive about how (little) prepared I am for the trip.

(EA) I'm most looking forward to just interacting with the families and children that will attend these camps and seeing them learn about Jesus's love for us and have a good time doing so. Probably what I'm most apprehensive about is the language barrier as it introduces some complication into communicating with the people we go to serve.

How can we pray for you?
(AZ) Please pray for that I would have more of a sense of urgency in my heart as well as spending more time preparing my heart to serve. Please also pray for the kids and the families we will interact with, that we would truly value the time spent with them and use the opportunity to share with them the love of Christ.

(EA) Please pray for preparation of our hearts as we go into the missions field. While we are overseas, please also pray for strength, that we would continuously dedicate our energy to each other and the people we're serving, and trust in the Lord that we would know and believe that He is working before and beyond the short time we spend in Asia.
