Understanding Evangelism

Hello Friends,

This summer I (Ethan) had the privilege to travel to East Asia and preach the word of God. It has been an amazing, perspective-altering journey!

I went to East Asia with a team of 15 members to preach the Good News to primarily university students. For about five weeks, we took a Chinese course in the morning, and then dedicated the rest of the day to ministry.

Despite the countless blessings we received, there were still many team and personal obstacles. As a team, we were very inexperienced because almost half of us were freshmen with little or no serious evangelism experience. However, there was tremendous growth among all of us, especially for the younger members of our team.

Personally, I came into the trip with the incorrect viewpoint of ministry, which I battled for the first half of my time there. I placed "accepting Christ" above all else, leading me to roller coasters of emotions and only thinking that students who decided to accept the Gospel were worth talking about. After talking to the leader on my team about it, I slowly began to understand that us Christians' job in evangelism only goes as far as communicating the Gospel with the Holy Spirit's help. Anything after that is solely the Spirit working in them. Thus, we must be constantly praying and pleading for the conviction of those we interacted with.

Nevertheless, we received a multitude of blessings on this missions trip. One major blessing was the unity and cohesiveness of our team. We had little to no conflicts with each other and we all developed a unique relationship with another. At first, I was taken aback when I saw the spiritual fire many of the team members exemplified, soon realizing I needed to examine myself within. I soon understood/experienced what it really meant to be surrounded by God-loving/fearing people. It definitely helped my adjustment to the culture and to ministry, knowing that my team was ready to support me both spiritually and emotionally. All in all, our team composition was an enormous grace given to us. I know we will continue to stay connected in years to come!

God saved 14 souls this summer! As encouraging as this news is, I believe that even if we had no salvations this trip, it would have been just as meaningful. Because God was able to use our team to share the Gospel with 124 students!! So much to give thanks for! Through this, God's sovereignty and goodness became very apparent to our team.

I highly encourage all collegians to get connected with a missions organization or with their own fellowship to see what opportunities lie ahead. As a collegian, we have time and resources that would otherwise be unavailable once we graduate. That’s why I urge all of you to at least consider missions. Sometimes it takes a journey to another continent to really open our eyes to see the lost and to experience God in tangible means. At the end of our marathon, our material possessions and worldly reputations will cease to matter, but our work for God lives eternally. Thanks for reading guys!

God Bless,
Ethan Ng
