WLS+AZ Missions - Day 9
Happy (Belated) 4th of July everyone!
We’re all doing well! Very tired, but healthy and all looking forward to what God has in store for us over the next few days. We are currently on our second day of VBS out here on the Navajo Reservation out here in Arizona, so let me catch you up on what we’ve been doing.
Friday and Saturday were our travel days as we made our way from Roach, Missouri—where the WLS conference was being held—all the way to Twin Mesa Bible Church on the Reservation. Around 2pm on Friday we said our goodbyes to the friends we had made during the camp and drove back to St. Louis for a quick look at the famous arch and some delicious BBQ. After a layover in Minnesota we finally made it to Phoenix for a hotel night stay and then met up with the HSMTers the following morning.
Sunday morning we got to join Twin Mesa Bible Church for their regular Sunday service. Then we went out to the surrounding areas, greeting to old friends and inviting everyone we could find to our VBS. For me, as tired as I may be feeling right now, it feels great to be out here on the reservation after 2 years. The kids are all much taller and and the high schoolers all seem a little bit younger, but the Reservation hasn’t changed at all. The night sky and the land is as beautiful as ever and I find myself in familiar moments like washing dishes outside behind the house in the hot sun or brushing my teeth at night looking up at the Milky Way.
Monday night was one of the most special moments I feel like I’ve had out here on the Reservation even after going on this trip so many times. We were invited out to the softball field 10 minutes from where we’re camping out to join the extended Yazzie family for a giant 4th of July Celebration. There was softball, a massive spread of delicious food (fry bread included), and an awesome fireworks display you can only experience out here on the Reservation. Something felt so right about seeing Navajo elders and kids alike fellowshipping with those of us from LA at a level of comfortability we usually only get to by the end of the week. For me, the night was full of joy and assured me that this is exactly where I want to and need to be.
For us on the WLS team, this is our second week of missions. Friday felt like finishing up a missions trip as we left the Warrior Leadership Summit, but here we are back in Arizona for Day 1 of VBS. Please pray against weariness and pray that we’d get that second wave of energy that can only come from God. We’re helping out the teens class as small group leaders so pray that God will give us words to say and that we would know how to introduce these youth to God or help them on their journeys of faith. And pray that we would glorify God in our actions and in the relationship we build out here.
