Thailand Missions (2016) "Hump Day"
To recuperate from our long day yesterday, we stayed in this morning. We had lunch with the BBI [Bethel Bible Institute] students. We also had an opportunity to teach the English class at BBI this afternoon before heading out to Pha Mi Church for dinner and teaching.
After meeting with students at BBI and separate conversations with Lillian and Paul, I’ve come to see the gravity of an ongoing drug epidemic here in Northern Thailand. Drugs are so easy to get here and so cheap that parents would even use them to soothing a sick or ailing child rather than to bring them to a doctor. The drugs would probably calm them down, but then it starts a cycle where they can have drug withdrawal.
Two of the three BBI students I had lunch with were previous drug addicts. Praise God, they experienced God through drug rehabilitation and are now pursuing ministry.
All of the students staying at the Pha Mi Student Center are from broken homes, where parents are divorced, in prison or on drugs. Yesterday, at Happy Camp, I was annoyed by the boys because they were super unruly. But, I now see the importance of showing the kids even more love. As Jesus gave unselfishly to meet emotional and physical needs of multitudes, I am humbled to try to do the same.
We have two more days left. Please pray that we’re able to make the most of our time.
