Let the Sea Roar (T-Minus 1 day)
Shane & Shane put out a nice second album of “Psalms”,
songs of select chapters from Psalms 16-139. As I looked up the lyrics to see
if they were truly biblical, and as I wondered what I could say to you through
this post, I thought I’d write about Psalm 98. Shane & Shane’s rendition of
“Sing Unto the Lord” goes like this:
Let the seas roar and
all that fills it
Let the world rejoice and all who are in it
Let the rivers clap their hands and the mountains sing
Strike up the band, come usher in Jesus the King
Sing unto the Lord a new song for what He’s done
He’s made known to us His salvation
Make a joyful noise
Oh all the earth
Break forth in joyous song
Sing praise
Let the world rejoice and all who are in it
Let the rivers clap their hands and the mountains sing
Strike up the band, come usher in Jesus the King
Sing unto the Lord a new song for what He’s done
He’s made known to us His salvation
Make a joyful noise
Oh all the earth
Break forth in joyous song
Sing praise
Then, halfway into formulating this blogpost, Doris texted the
team saying that our flight tomorrow may have been pushed back because of a 160
mph typhoon – Typhoon Nepartak! Our connecting flight from Taipei to Bangkok may
not have been rebooked either, along with the other 100-some flights that were
canceled out of Taipei. So we might miss our flight from Bangkok to Chiang Rai,
too…
Here’s what Psalm 98 actually says:
O sing to the LORD a
new song, for He has done wonderful things, His right hand and His holy arm
have gained the victory for Him. The LORD has made known His salvation; He has
revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered His
lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the
earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Let the sea roar and
all it contains, the world and those who dwell in it. Let the rivers clap their
hands, let the mountains sing together for joy before the LORD…
-Psalm 98:1-3, 7-9
After reading Doris’ text, I took a pause. And then I
prayed.
Dear God, let the seas
roar, but don’t let them cancel our flights!
If God is mighty to create galaxies, the earth, and
everything in it, I picture his “holy arm” looking like glowing, buff biceps.
If He’s gained the victory—for HIM—then He’s already made known His salvation.
His creation alone is proof of His righteousness: the great shifts of the
earth, the violent blowing of typhoons, the daily rising of the sun, the deep
clamor in the clouds. The earth has already seen God’s salvation by His
faithfulness through the wonder of creation.
Through this post, originally, I would’ve written something
like, “Please pray that our reflections will truly reflect God’s righteousness,
and that our songs be filled with joy.” To add to that, pray that we would
patiently wait and listen for God’s whisper—through the typhoon, through the
ever-changing logistics. And by the renewing of our stressed, anxious, and
scattered minds, may our faith increasingly prove what God’s good and perfect
will is—when and how to go through each circumstance with joy in order to reach
to the Thai people.
And just as I’m about to finish this post, Doris texts us
again saying our flight has been rescheduled to an evening flight!!! Kup koon
Yesu! (Thank you, Jesus!) One thing I learned in previous mission experiences -
always be flexible! There will be more updates later, but for now, please pray
for God’s guidance over us and our contacts at home and in Thailand, esp for
Doris as she communicates with the travel agent to change our flights. Kup koon kaa!
Now to start packing…
-Alisa
P.S. If you would like to send us off, we will be having a time of prayer in the church courtyard from 4PM to 5PM tomorrow!
