Flight Report, 3.01.2014

"The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with [Moses] as he called upon the name of the Lord. Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations. Moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship.Exodus 34:5-9

The rain has been falling in LA County since about 3:00am Friday morning. At times there's a pause but for the most party it's been pretty steady. We've probably been inside our apartments, homes or offices for most of the day where it's dry and warm, grateful that the rain is not coming through the roof or windows. We've likely not given any thought to how the structures we're in are saving us from getting soaked. The floor, walls, roof and windows are doing their job.
The security and protection our homes provide makes me think of the passage above: God's communicable attributes are like a structure around us and we dwell in them. He expresses qualities to us to experience them as well as to extend to others. We dwell within his compassion, grace, patience, care and lovingkindness. He places around us His truth, faithfulness, forgiveness and justice. It is a comfort and joy to know that God loves and cares for his people through his attributes.
Moses' response to this reality was to "bow low toward the earth and worship." I often take God's attributes for granted, just like the home that shields me from the rain—I'm grateful to be out of the rain but I don't recognize that the structure is doing its job. The reality of how God is and what He extends to me should move me to "bow low and worship". His attributes, both communicable and incommunicable, should provoke us to worship.
