Lift Off! New Year - Day 01

Day 01: "Recognized"
In light of what we prayed yesterday about 'derecognition', let's pray for recognition by our campus ministries despite any difficulty or speed-bumps that may come our way this year.

“Derecognition” might finally be the catalyst on our campuses to see the gospel run like wildfire.

Please read this article.

Ephesians 6:12-13, 18
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm...With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints...

Pray that we would emphasize our relationships with those on our campuses. That we would be bold to carry the message of forgiveness, grace, and fellowship to everyone around us despite the possibility that meetings won't occur on campus. Pray that we use our conversations and words to speak love and truth into the lives of our classmates, roommates, and friends. That we would speak out and continue to share our Christ-like lives despite any formal gathering or presentation in large groups. And pray that the Gospel of Jesus Christ would cause many to seek and respond. That we would have faith and courage to use this powerful message everyday.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 02

Day 02: "Derecognized"
"InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) has been, in modern campus terminology, “derecognized” by California State University schools. Basically, they will no longer be a recognized campus organization on any of the 23 schools in that system. IVCF has been derecognized because they require their leaders to have Christian beliefs"...Please read this article.

As the article has pointed out, there are many issues included beyond just 'derecognition' with this discussion (Such as the possibility/reality that this may include even more campus fellowships). And of course, a host of questions that surround these heated topics begin to arise--many of which cannot be answered at this time. But what we can do is pray. Let's be vigilant and constant in the very fact that God hears our prayers and we can go to Him in this time of need. Pray for our campus fellowships to remain courageous and strong through this speed-bump. Pray that those involved would be wise with their decisions and reactions to exemplify Christ and His mission to us. Pray that the mission not only continues, but flourishes and grows despite through this difficulty.

Ephesians 5:15-17
Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 03

Day 03: Transfer Students
There are a number of our students transferring from public school to private school; community college to university, vice-versa, and don't forget our graduate students(!). Whether it was by choice or not, let's lift up these changes to God on their behalf.

Psalm 138:7-8
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Pray for these students who are changing their environments in the middle of their college careers--this change alone warrants much intercession for their transition. Pray for clear direction in these new places, that their focus would be even greater. Pray that whatever reason for their change in schools, that God would use them in their new places of study to find His purposes, will, and community.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 04

Day 04: Freshmen
We have 27 students in our incoming class this year! 5 are/have headed to northern California and 1 will be out-of-state (not too far from the northern border though!).

Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV)
Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

Pray for all the 'new' things: classes, environment, friends, living situation, community, etc. Pray that these students would adjust smoothly and not be overwhelmed--taking in all that college has to offer with wise discernment. Pray that they would balance both their new-found independence and much needed dependence that will stimulate their faith. And pray that they would "let go of their past (high school) to be able to look ahead to God has in store." -Matthew Tsang (Freshman, UCI)

Lift Off! New Year - Day 05

Day 05: Lift Off!
Lift Off! simply encourages participants to pray. Over 10 days, we will be presenting 10 prayer requests that we ask you to pray over for 10 (solid) minutes. Lift Off! presents 10 areas of prayer that may include specific people, ministries, or aspects of growth. It is meant to be a blast of encouragement and intercession by a committed group of people over the course of 10 days.

Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We're going to pray about praying? Yup. Pray that we would uphold prayer to the highest priority. Pray that this would inspire us to pray more throughout each day and use it as a powerful tool in our lives. Pray that these exercises of prayer would change our hearts to focus on God's will and purposes for our lives through blessing and suffering.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 06

Day 06: Customs
We are directed by Jesus to bring Truth, healing and help to our world. Customs covers the missional aspect of Flight. Customs currently organizes annual projects in the spring and summer and supports collegians partnered with other organizations.

Matthew 9:37-38
Then He [Jesus] said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest."

Pray for our missions wing of Flight to bring the Gospel to those around us and beyond. Pray for opportunities for us to spread Truth both locally, on campus, and abroad. Pray for where God may lead us this upcoming summer. Lastly, pray for boldness across our students to bring God's Word to anyone who we may come across wherever we may go.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 07

Day 07: Commuters
Similar to the evening gathering of Annex, Commuters gathers the students at local colleges for dinner and fun.

Phillipians 3:13-14
Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Pray for the bi-monthly gatherings to be fruitful and bring unity amongst our students locally. That they would feel a sense of community despite being at various schools. Pray for clear direction both academically and spiritually for these students. Pray that they find confidence in their identity in Christ rather than a prestigious school. And pray that their direction would be based on God's will rather than other influences of the world.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 08

Day 08: Annex
"We come to you." Annex brings the church to university campuses. A small group of individuals visits universities and brings concern, encouragement and prayer. The small group meets 1-on-1 with students then gathers everyone together for a meal and fun. For those who don't visit home often, the visits keep the students connected with the church.

Acts 2:46-47
Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

As the largest aspect of Flight Ministry, please pray for it to be effectively used for God's purposes. Pray that this ministry would be a place where our students can find a small connection to our church even while away. Pray that the 1-on-1 times this upcoming year would be fruitful to bring spiritual growth and build relationships. Pray that students would enjoy the time shared together in the evenings--eating, laughing, and praying. Pray that this would also be an opportunity to reach out to friends, classmates, and roommates outside of our FCBC circle to be encouraged.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 09

Day 09: HUB
HUB is where collegians gather to check-in and catch-up. Since many collegians are dispersed to various schools, HUB gathers students together to reconnect through outings and events. It's a large group time that meets at various times throughout the year on significant days (such as holiday weekends). HUB captures the annual Winter Retreat held between Christmas and New Year's.

Philippians 2:1-2
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

Pray that as a ministry, we would be able to leverage HUB to be a place that will not only gather students for fellowship, but for true reconnection. Pray that we would create an environment where students are comfortable and encouraged to attend. Pray that students would utilize these large gatherings to intentionally meet with their peers and meet new people.

Lift Off! New Year - Day 10

Day 10: Passage
Traditionally known as Sunday School, Passage is the weekly gathering on Sunday mornings to examine and discover truths and application from the Bible.

Pray for this area of Flight ministry that dives into Scripture deeply every Sunday. Pray that students would have minds and hearts ready to hear, study, and discuss the Truth of God's Word. Pray that our teachers (Kevin Chan, Ernie Lew, Carl Sujo, Danny Orh, Darren Lo) and aides (Ruby Kwan and Josh Yuan) would teach and facilitate through the Holy Spirit. That the staff would have the time and energy to prepare for class and know how best to present the lessons.
