Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 01

Day 01 - Summer Enrichment Program

For 6 weeks in the summer, FCBCLA is hosting a day-long program for young children to tutor, teach, and participate in various activities. A number of college students are serving this ministry by teaching or caring for the young kids. While not being too far away, this is a great opportunity to minister, show love, and engage in Bible stories with community children. Here are their prayer requests:
 
Nelson Kuan
For me, you can pray that I'll be a good witness to the parents, especially when they come pick up their kids and interact with the staff. You can also pray that on the night of the open house, which is the last day of the program, we would show Christ's love to the parents as we have different people from church interact with the parents. And lastly, I think you can also pray that we would not worry and be so focused on numbers, and rather on being impactful to the children and family members.

Pray for patience and being able to nurture relationships with the kids.

Sharlene Ishikawa
Please pray for good health, I had a huge headache today (Thursday) and I couldn't really interact and meet the kids at the same level, also wisdom and patience - there are some difficult kids with various things that make them hard to interact. Also, I'm still trying to plan but if you could pray that what I do would somehow reach the kids on more than just a simple craft level.

A prayer request for SEP would be for the kids to be more cooperative throughout the program. Sometimes it's really hard for them to follow directions, when one of the kids is messing around, all the other kids follow. On that note, also for patience and to remember that we can have a huge impact on these kids as they're growing up. And to remember our goal of building relationships with both the children and their parents.

Please pray for rest & energy (because I’m morning shift and I’m definitely not a morning person; had to take a nap everyday this week and i never take naps :/ I haven’t been this tired since high school) For creativity to help teach the kids because I’m running out of ideas đŸ˜¬ . Wisdom from the Lord to help deliver the content of my curriculum effectively (wouldn’t speak too fast, they would understand). Soft hearts from both the kids and parents so that hopefully this exposure would encourage them to come on Sundays.

Energy!!! Because even though we spend only four hours with the kids they drain our energy pretty quickly.

I think the biggest prayer request is for the shepherds and teachers just to have patience. We spend like 5 hours with them 5 days a week so this really tests your patience and it’s hard to not get frustrated.

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 02

Dates: July 20 - August 1
Location: Myanmar
Organization: Friends of Grace

I will be working alongside 30 other people consisting of dentists, doctors, and pre-med/pre-dental students that will offer free medical, dental, and social services for local churches, Bible Schools, refugee camps, and orphanages in Myanmar. We hope to spread the love of God through treating over a thousand patients in two weeks. My specific role will include working as a chair side assistant to the dentists performing procedures such as extractions, root canals, and more.

I had previously gone on this trip in 2015 and have not stopped thinking about Myanmar since then. These past few summers, I have not had the chance to return, but when this opportunity arose to go with Friends of Grace again, I took it! I am currently pursuing a dental career and I want to be able to link my career with serving God, to go overseas and provide healthcare, showing God’s love through my actions.

I’m looking forward to serving people through dental aid and for the connections that are made with the Burmese despite the language barrier. Least looking forward to the irregular poop schedule…but ya know its all good!

Pray that Christ’s love will be seen through our actions as we serve the Burmese people, for our hearts to be softened to see things how Christ sees things, and for safety as we go through areas where it is politically unstable and where Christianity may not be as welcomed.

Please pray for Kristy as she left to Wildwood nearly right after her finals ended. Her plane was delayed, but she has made it there safely. Pray for her adjustment into the new environment and God's sustaining energy throughout the weeks of the trip.

Thailand Missions (2018) "Finally Ready"

Hi Everyone! Thank you so much again for all your prayers and support for our team as we prepare to take off to Thailand in 2 days. It's such crazy grace and mercy from all of you and the Lord to even be typing that.

Preparing for Thailand has been one of the most stressful experiences I've gone through for awhile. Before the trip, I had finished a research paper, 2 projects, finals, a trip to Seattle, and a trip to Korea, all while trying to keep my gaze on God's face. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I would be ready at all to try and affect souls considering my own well-being, but God's provision is always enough. Through the process, He provided me with community to push me and His presence/word to calm me even as I constantly found new distractions to stress me out.

Physically, emotionally, and spiritually, I now find myself ready to go.

Physically - Though school and travel were supposed to tire me out, I find a hidden pool of energy in me that continues to sustain me to pray and meet God in the midst of busy days.   

Emotionally - I tend to be a pretty shy, introverted person. Usually, I dread meeting new people and trying to build relationships when I already have an established in-group, especially with my stutter. Although I still feel anxious that my physical body won't be enough, I trust that my Lord, Savior and Creator of the Universe can overcome my speech impediments, shyness, and introversion.

Spiritually - God's shown His constancy and sovereignty in every part of my life especially in this past quarter of earthly struggle, and being able to be still in His presence has been so freeing. Knowing that His promises are true and that we're working for His glory allows me to put aside earthly worry and focus on the kingdom.

Recently, I read a devotional about dying to myself. It challenged the reader, asking, "What would dying to yourself feel like? Will people clap for you? Will they congratulate you?" Dying to myself in this world means turning from earthly values and chasing heavenly treasures despite what the world sees. I hope to continue the process in sharing God's love to others now in Thailand.

T-2 Prayer Requests

 - Please pray for all of our actions and words to glorify God and encourage each other as the team is there to show God in us to the people we encounter.

- Please pray for team. Pray that we will be able to put aside our personal differences and empathize + show compassion to one another as we strive towards the same goal. Pray that we'll be overcome our shyness and ignorance to share boldly while being culturally aware.

- Please pray for travel mercies and against energy loss from jetlag.

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 04

Day 04 - Arizona Missions
Spencer Sun, Austin Quon, Nathan Pun

Dates: July 7 - 15
Location: Hard Rock, Arizona (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: High School Missionary Team of FCBC LA

Spencer:
I will be facilitating the teens class at our annual VBS on the Navajo reservation. As much as I enjoy pushing buttons, God knows how to push mine even better and more uncomfortably.

I am looking forward to reaching out to Matthew’s (the Navajo living with me) family and partnering with a Navajo Christian, Karly Robertson. I am not looking forward to the heat, sleeping on the ground in a tent, and infrequent showers.

Pray for good synergy as Karly works alongside us.  Pray also for strength, energy, and reliance upon and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit as I am also teaching Sunday School and directing high school camp.


Nathan:
In Arizona I will be leading a small group of Navajo teens and teaching them about God through the discussions and interactions I have with them. I will also be continuing to build up my previous relationship with the Navajo and showing them the love God has for them. God has led me to this trip through the persuasion of other people going on the trip and several Navajos. I also have a heart for the Navajo, so the push from these people made me decide to go on the trip.

I'm looking forward to see what God has planned for the Navajos, and how He will use me for His will. I'm actually really scared of going even though this is my fifth time because I feel very unprepared since I've been at school and have only video called into 2 meetings.

Pray for a correct mindset since I will have less than a month from the time school ends to the time I leave. Pray for a willing and serving heart. Lastly, pray for wisdom in how to lead by example since the people I am going with are in high school and have less experience than me.

Austin:
I will be joining HSMT team out in Arizona to go & help teach the Navajos about Jesus Christ. But really I’m just their maintenance/handy man. Honestly, I am going because I heard God call and even if it’s a short mission trip you can make an impact on the people around you or it makes greater impact on yourself.

What I look forward to this trip is God teaching me something new. I always learn a good or bad habit that God says how can you use this to better yourself. What I don’t look forward to is the mixed weather, one minute it can be hot next it’s raining.

How you can pray from me is I wouldn’t let my comfort effect my behavior as heat does make me cranky. God will teach me a new way of being a better Christian. After the trip that I be more open to sharing what I learned.

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 05

Organization: Redeemer's Grace Church, San Diego

We will be putting on a women’s conference at Shore Baptist Church in Auckland. We will also be coordinating a VBS at Community Baptist Church in Wellsford later on in the trip. In the evenings, we will be doing various evangelism activities such as door-to-door evangelism and visiting the University of Auckland to encourage the Tertiary Students Christian Fellowship.

I did not want to go on the trip at first, because I was interested in doing an internship for the summer, or taking summer school. In addition, my parents were opposed to me going. However, in praying about it and talking to some sisters, God brought it to my attention that I was not placing Him first in thinking through these things; rather, I was prioritizing career. Another reason was that my parents were not supportive of me going on the trip. In one conversation especially, one of my good friends asked me why I thought it would be better to not go. I said that my parents did not want me to, and that I felt like I would be trampling on their sacrifice (of sending me to school/paying for it/etc.) and disobeying God’s command to honor my parents if I did decide to go. Then she said, “Don’t you know, when you don’t love and prioritize God above all things, that you’re trampling on Christ’s sacrifice?” Her words really hit me hard. In talking to my discipler about the consequences of not doing an internship, such as it being harder to find a job in the future, she said, “Why is that relevant? Why not have it be harder to find a job in the future? Is that up to you? Do you really believe that when you seek God’s kingdom first, that everything else will be okay?” It was through these conversations that I realized that even though verses like Matthew 6:33 are very familiar, it was only head knowledge to me—not just in thinking about missions, but in life in general. These things made me consider what was more important—things of temporary value, like career, or things of eternal value, like proclaiming the gospel and serving the Church? Other thoughts included considering what it means to obey and honor my parents, but love God above them. In the end, by God’s grace, I decided to go on the trip because in my heart, I knew that my motivations to not go came from a place of selfishness and focusing on the temporal. I prayed that I would honor and respect my parents beforehand, then told them about my decision. In the end, by God’s grace, they came to support my decision, financially and in prayer. I’m really thankful for what God has been teaching me in all these ways even prior to the trip itself.

I think I’m just looking forward to see how God will answer the prayers of our team and how He will use the team to further His kingdom. I am personally very excited about the  women’s conference and the VBS, but as a whole, I’m just excited to exercise the privilege of sharing the gospel and can’t wait to see what God will do!

Please pray for (1) preparation for the women’s conference, (2) that God will prepare the hearts of those who will hear the gospel, and (3) that God will prepare the hearts of our team to be bold and compassionate in sharing the gospel by first growing us each in seeing the gospel as a reality in our day-to-day lives. Thanks so much for prayer and support! Very excited to see how God will answer these prayers!

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 06

Day 06 - Thailand Team

For those of you just joining us, Flight Ministry is praying for a missionary everyday for 10 days. Today, our focus is on the Thailand Team, so it counts for this prayer campaign and our Thailand Team updates as we prepare to head out soon! Welcome!

 Dates: June 23 - July 5
Place: ChiangMai, Thailand
Organization: FCBC LA

Hey everyone! Our group consists of 9 individuals: Alisa Wong, Melody Kuan, Whitney Hung, Melody Young, Darren Lo, Jonny Lee, Matthew Tsang, and Kevin Lin. We will be working with Denise Poon (bottom right) at an English Tutoring facility called 'The Centre' in Chiang Mai, Thailand. On our schedule will be a number of events held by The Centre that we will take part in: worship night, cooking night, and a special July 4th celebration.

About a year ago, God put on my heart a desire to go on missions. Where? I wasn't sure. But I knew God would bring people together for a missional trip if our ministry had planned one. I began to pray and look for opportunities. Earlier this year, our church focused on missions and offered a few opportunities to visit some of the missionaries we send out (Denise being one of them). As our plans solidified, God has given me and brought others to join in His mission to Thailand. We see this as a chance to minister to His people abroad, support a supported missionary, and partner with a ministry that has permanence and longevity in the region.

For me personally, I look forward to the many opportunities we have to meet new people, begin partnership in ministry, and bring the Gospel with us to Chiang Mai. It will be difficult work, the conditions different, and leading a team may be strenuous, but my hope is to gain a greater perspective in leaning on God for His direction, His strength, and His transformative power.

Please pray for us! I see God shaping our time there with specific plans, but should they fall through, or not meet certain expectations, pray that we will be flexible and faithful. His ways are higher than ours and doing little (or big) things everyday are for His sovereign ways to be glorified. Pray for me as I lead and make decision--probably while traveling and in not-so-comfortable circumstances. That God's wisdom would be my guide rather than my own thoughts. Pray for patience and perseverance. Lastly, pray for kingdom-mindedness--our focus would be on ministry and missions as we learn a new culture, a new environment, and as a new team.

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 07

Organization: Epic/Campus Crusade

Over the course of 8 weeks, we will get summer jobs and learn to live out our faith in the context of work, minister to those around us, and take part in ministry-related training and small groups at night during the week. A speaker at CMC said, “Everyone asks where you are going on missions, but it is not about the place, it is about the people.” This resonated in my heart because it made me realize that I didn’t need to go somewhere crazy in order to be a missionary, especially when Christianity rates here in the US are dropping. I look forward to being able to meet Epic students from all around the nation and hear about how God has been present in each of their lives.

Prayer requests would be for our team to bond together since most of us don't know each other. Also, for learning opportunities from other students/staff so I can take it back to my fellowship at Fullerton.

I will be at Kyoto University engaging in cold contact evangelism!

God opened up space in my school schedule to go on missions this summer. I decided to go to Japan because the Japanese people are the largest unreached people group in the world! And am looking forward to experiencing God's sovereignty and provision in the missions field! also looking forward to meeting and engaging with people with different backgrounds and perspectives.

Please pray that my team would have great teamwork and reliance on one another. Pray that we would not be caught up with the number of conversions but also pray that we would be praying BIG prayers!

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 09

During my missions trip, I will be getting a job near the pier in Wildwood, New Jersey. Wildwood is packed with international people getting and working (low-wage) jobs on the pier to make more money to bring home. The staff from Epic will train us students to spread the gospel with the people around us and our coworkers.

I went to the Chinese mission conference and Epic West Coast conference during winter break and I knew that I didn’t have many summers where I would have the time and opportunity to go on such a “long” missions trip. I was able to lead a high school girl to Christ during cold contact with my epic conference small group and I felt God telling me I should continue spreading his work by going on missions this summer.

I am looking forward to seeing how God can impact the lives of the people around me in the 2 months I am there and I am also excited to bond with new Epics friends. I am least looking forward to the limited asian food places and no boba, haha.

Pray that I will have the right attitude and heart set on glorifying God during this mission trip.
Pray for the team’s unity, health, safety, and willingness to serve God.
Pray for the hearts of the people we encounter and that they will be open to hearing God’s Word.

Lift Off! Summer Missions - Day 10

Dates: June 13 - August 12
Location: Uganda, Africa
Organization: Africa Inland Mission (AIM)

My short term missions team will be supporting AIM's goal to spread the gospel and build relationships with a largely unreached tribe known as the Karimojong. In the few years, God has taught me so much about the importance of evangelism through experiences at missions conferences, and He  also has challenged me to be a missionary at school through my campus fellowship.

Now I sense God calling me to join in his global mission. I am excited to experience the kingdom of God and witness the work of God in Uganda. However, this will be my first time leaving home for longer than the occasional week-long vacations that I have taken with my family.

Please pray for 1) that I will have an open mind and open heart to God’s calling for me and the different cultures that I will experience, 2) for team unity, and 3) for the salvation of the Karimojong people.
