Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 02

Day 02: Danny Su
Super Senior, UCLA

Missions Information
July 3 - July 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

I'm going with High School Missionary Team (HSMT) to serve as the prayer coordinator (along with Edwin Chueng) for the team. So we're basically there to establish a culture of self-initiating prayer times among the HSMTers. I've been wanting to go back for the last several years, but I believe God was closing those doors for me. Now, I know that God is allowing me to go back to serve as a different role, which I'm quite excited about.

Would you pray for a collective singular focus of our team on the mission of God? Everyone is coming in from all walks/stages of life with different expectations, worries, and even objectives. I can see how the enemy can use these things to hinder us from what God is doing. Pray also for my trust in God and my team. The enemy is going to target all of us in different ways, and when it gets rough, it's so easy for me to downplay it and not feel a need to share my concerns with anyone.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 03

Day 03: Merry Lee
Freshman, UCLA

Missions Information
July 10 - July 19
Location: Taiwan
Organization: Medical Students Culture Exchange

Our missions team consists of 17 undergraduate and graduate students across the United States who all have the desire to share the Gospel to nearly 60 unsaved Taiwanese medical students and to learn about the Taiwanese culture/medical education. During our time in Taiwan, we will be residing at Mackay Medical College and will have the opportunity to share the Gospel as well as the American culture with the students there. Each U.S. team member will function as TA’s for a group of Taiwanese students. Our role is to actively engage them in conversations about Christianity and build personal relationships as a way to share our testimonies. Each day will consist of activities such as worship night, testimony sharing from every American student, and bible study with the group.

Pray for our team’s ability to be an image of Christ when we interact with the Taiwanese students.
Pray for the salvation of these students who may be convicted and become part of God’s family
Pray for the health and safety of our travel.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 04

Day 04: Oliver Yen
Freshmen, PCC

Missions Information
July 36 - July 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

I get to be a "handyman" for High School Missionary Team (HSMT) and am thrilled to be able to help in this way. I've always considered missions, but didn't feel too strongly about teaching and caring for children up front. This opportunity gives me a chance to try missions in a way I'm more comfortable with--doing background work. I get a chance to support the missions team with any help needed for setup and living accommodations.

Please pray for wisdom to take care of any situations that may need help, repair, or setup--that we would know how to handle each assignment. Pray for adaptability to the changing environment and anything that may come up with tasks. And pray for a cheerful attitude throughout the entire trip as we work together.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 05

Day 05: Ashley Chuck
Junior, Washington Univ (St Louis)

Missions Information
July 8 - 24
Location: Thailand
Organization: FCBC

Our team will be teaching English to high school and elementary school age children during the first week of our trip. During the second week, we will be going up (literally) to the villages in the mountains to share the gospel. Since I'm starting a graduate program in the fall, this summer is free for me: a rare time when I'm not required to take classes or find an internship or be doing anything academically impressive. I want to use this time intentionally, and I believe that missions is the best way to do so. Over the past school year, God has been repeatedly reminding me that the harvest is plenty, but the workers are few: there are always more people in need of and searching for the gospel than there are people available to fill those needs. As I've grown and served over the last few years, I've come to realize that missional living is more about your availability and willingness than your ability or confidence. This free summer has given me the opportunity to be available for a longer trip like Thailand, and to go with FCBC, which has been a huge blessing to me in my college years. As my first time overseas, it's sure to be uncomfortable and challenging, but I know that God can use my willingness to move in powerful ways.

Please pray for us! The team is still hammering out some of the logistical details, so praying that our arrangements and the remainder of our planning go smoothly - that we can discern where and whom we can best serve. Please also lift up our team's health and safety throughout this trip. And that I would personally be spiritually prepared; sensitive to ways in which God may be asking me to go beyond my expectations or comfort zones and then willing to respond courageously.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 06

Day 06: Edwin Cheung
Freshman, CP.SLO

Missions Information
July 3 - July 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

As I return to the Navajo reservation in Arizona, I will be serving as a prayer person to support the High School Missionary Team (HSMT). We will be coordinating daily prayers and going around praying for individuals and leading the team as a whole. This summer I knew I wanted to go on missions and God had opened up a lot of doors for me, but ultimately I decided on Arizona because I felt the desire to invest back into my home church, FCBC.

Please pray for physical strength through the week, it can be spiritually draining to lead in these times of prayer. Pray that I may be a good example of focusing in daily prayer and support others through this tool.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 07

Day 07: Spencer Sun
Super Deacon, UCLA

Missions Information
June 26 - July 10
Location: St. Louis, MO (WLS) &
Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

The first week I will be part of a team that will be partnering with Faith Jelle, our Navajo reservation missionary, at a Native American Christian conference in Missouri.  There, we will be cabin leaders, live with the Navajo, many of which we are familiar with us because of past Arizona trips, and hopefully learn more about their culture and help raise indigenous leaders.  The second week we will be in Arizona with HSMT and ideally co-leading small groups with the Navajo. This idea all started when we would hear during VBS what the Navajo teens learned from the conference and thought that this would be a good opportunity for the collegians to spend more time with the Navajo and partner with them during the week of Arizona.

Pray that I would be humble enough to ask for prayer and help and that I rely more on the Holy Spirit than my own wisdom.  I think I am putting too much pressure on myself to lead well when I need to relinquish all control and wisdom to God.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 08

Day 08: Austin Quon
Freshman, PCC

Missions Information
July 3 - 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ
Organization: First Chinese Baptist Church LA, High School Missionary Team (HSMT)

This year, I get to be a handyman to support the High School Missionary Team during a week of VBS at the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. This work requires that I help setup and support various structures (like showers, sink, and tents) throughout the week in order to let the ministry team run smoothly without much hiccups. I will also try to be as flexible as possible which may include helping in any VBS class or babysitting.

I decided to go to Arizona this year because I wasn't able to go to a previous missions trip earlier this year. This trip also fit my summer schedule well as I prayed and felt God calling me back. But during the time to prepare to go, it was brought up that I was mentally telling myself not to go, but I knew spiritually that I should go.

From being a high schooler to now becoming a staff I foresee that I may face many difficulties that might be challenging. Please pray for wisdom to be able to work with the team to solve any issues that may come up--even when I myself have trouble finding a solution. Pray also that I would be physically, mentally, & spiritually ready.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 09

Day 09: Kristy Leung
Junior, CSUF

Missions Information
July 8 - 24
Location: Thailand
Organization: FCBC

Having a relationship with Jesus is so significant to me so I want the people I meet in Thailand to know him too. He has given me hope, has healed me, has changed me, and most importantly, has given me the true Gospel. My prayer is that the people in Thailand may learn the truth and may find a new life in Jesus.

Please pray for our team to have love and unity throughout the trip. Pray for our hearts to be open towards the Thai people and they would open to the message of Christ. Pray that we would align with God's ways and timing--that we would not work outside of His will for us. Pray also for immense impact in the those that we come in contact with, but also to be available to be moved by God in our own lives.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 10

Day 10: Ryan Luu
Freshman, UCI

Missions Information
July 3 - 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ
Organization: First Chinese Baptist Church LA, High School Missionary Team (HSMT)

I will be helping out with the 2/3 class as a classroom leader. I will be assisting Frank when has to attend to other duties in Arizona. I will also be helping the high schoolers plan lessons, games, and craft ideas for class.

I was thinking about Arizona the whole year, but Spencer approached me and Jonny about going to Arizona as collegians. I really wanted to be able to serve the Navajo and grow with my brothers and sisters during Arizona. I also want to see God working in Arizona, because he does so every year.

Pray for my own spiritual, physical and mental health (specifically spiritual health). Pray that I will have the patience, understanding, and grace in interacting with other team members and the Navajo. Pray for a reminder of why I am going on this trip for God.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 11

Day 11: Ernest Wong
Freshman, UCI

Missions Information
June 26 - July 10
Location: St. Louis, MO (WLS) &
Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

Myself and 6 other collegians (and 1 adult) will be attending the Warrior Leadership Summit (WLS) in Missouri for a week with other collegians to learn more about the Navajo and how to facilitate small groups effectively using this information. The following week, we will be flying to the Navajo Reservation to meet with the High School Missionary Team (HSMT) where we will host a vacation bible school. With these two weeks, we seek to both spread God’s name throughout the Navajo reservation and raise leaders within their community that will guide them when we are gone.

I’ve never done missions on this scale before. Honestly, I’m a little intimidated. Please support me by praying that

  • God would increase my faith in His provision and guidance.
  • God would give HSMT foresight in lesson and small group planning.
  • God would soften the hearts of the Navajo to allow them to see the truth in the gospel.
  • God would be with the leaders of HSMT in their decision making and navigation through unforeseen obstacles.
  • God would bless me with sensitivity to their culture and discernment on which aspects are holy or not holy.
  • God would turn the Navajo into a God-fearing people!

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 12

Day 12: Adam Kuo
Junior, Biola

Missions Information
July 3 - July 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

On the trip, I will be helping lead the 4th/5th grade class alongside Kevin Leong. I will be helping to make sure that the class runs smoothly, that kids are listening and behaving during class, help the VBS teachers when needed, and do anything else that Kevin asks of me to do.

I was led to this particular trip over the course of 2016 as I discerned and prayed about where God may have wanted me to serve in a short term missions role during the summer. After attending Urbana over winter break, I felt a calling to go on a short term missions trip and be focused on opportunities that would present a chance for me to serve. As 2016 went by, it became clearer to me that the Lord was calling me back to the Navajo Reservation to serve and minister to the Navajo children. In addition, personal revelations from God and life happenings that closed other avenues for missions made it more clear to me that I was being pointed in a direction that would prepare and ready me for this particular trip.

Pray that my serving on the team would be out of an overflowing heart of love for Christ and that I would serve with a Christlike concern for the gospel to be spread on the reservation, not out of a manufactured and self-serving heart. In addition, pray that I would lead the 4th/5th grade class without any fears or worries about "the right way to lead", and that I would lead accordingly to how God uses me during the week.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 13

Day 13: Rochelle Lai
Junior, UC Berkeley

Missions Information
July 8 - 24
Location: Thailand
Organization: FCBC

We will be traveling to Chiang Rai, Thailand to share about Jesus by teaching English and meeting with various ministries already out there. I have travelled with my church’s mission team to Thailand once before in the summer of 2014. Since then, I have felt convicted to go back because I know that God is not done using me to serve Him in Thailand. I am excited to greet old faces from my prior trip, and to meet new ones –all individuals who are so deeply loved by Jesus Christ. Jesus is so significant to me that I want the individuals I interact and befriend in Thailand to know about Him too. He’s changed my life, and I know Jesus will significantly impact their lives as well.

Please pray for our team to love and unite through any circumstances that may come our way. Pray for our heart towards the Thai people to live with compassion and be examples of Jesus Christ to them. Pray that we may align with God's desire and will and to be lead by the Holy Spirit. And pray for great impact in the lives of the Thai, but also in my own spiritual life.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 14

Day 14: Katlyn Cheng
Sophomore, UCI

Missions Information
June 26 - July 10
Location: St. Louis, MO (WLS) &
Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

Our team of 7 people will be heading to St. Louis, Missouri to attend a Native American Christian Conference called Warrior Leadership Summit (WLS). There, we will be leading small groups and meeting one-on-one with Navajo with the intention to train to be leaders for our VBS in Arizona during the 2nd week. While I was deciding whether or not to go on this mission trip, I think God was really tugging on my heart. Honestly, I never thought I'd be returning to Missouri. My experience last year, while a good eye opening experience, was pretty difficult personally. In the beginning of this year, I hadn't even really considered it. I had made up my mind and decided I didn't want to go. But I think that what I wanted and what God wanted were not the same. Every time I came up with a reason not to go, God was giving me a reason why I should go. It was kind of like Him saying, "Am I not a good enough reason of why you should go?" Since I am not in the business of saying no to God, I decided to say yes and go.

Please pray for me as I prepare for this trip to have a humble heart and an open mind. Being the only returning collegian, I have some previous experience and therefore may have a certain mindset. Pray that I wouldn't go into this trip thinking that I know everything and that I would know that there is still more to learn. Pray that I also would be able to be fully present with those I am around. I think last year, as the week went on, I became really tired. Pray that despite my physical or even sometimes mental tiredness, that I would be able to continue to be present with those around me. Lastly, pray that God will continue to prepare me and the team for this trip that we as a team, would be able to work well together and support each other.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 15

Day 15: Clement Ng
Senior, UCSD

Missions Information
July 2016 - August 2017
Location: Taiwan
Organization: OMF International

I get a chance to participate in a pilot university student ministry program where the vision is to use cafés on university campuses as a platform to meet and reach students through evangelistic engagements and personal friendships. The whole goal here is to establish discipleship and mentoring relationships throughout the course of ministry throughout the year. I will also get a chance to teach English to local youth and help OMF missionaries with church planting activities. Our hope is that through these ministries, it may be a model for future ministries and missionaries to follow.

Please pray for me for flexibility throughout the entire year and in these various ministries as it can be extremely demanding throughout the year. Pray for availability to make myself aware of God's work in every area that He leads me. Pray for intentionality as I minister through whatever friendships and partnerships I may establish in the work throughout the year. Pray for a great heart for God's people throughout my trip, that I may see them through His eyes. Above all, pray that my heart remains faithful to a great and personal God to grow in Him more than ever.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 16

Day 16: Mitchell Lam
Freshman, ELAC

Missions Information
July 3 - July 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

This year in Arizona, I have the opportunity to continue working with the Navajo Teens class during a VBS on the reservation. In my 2nd year with the teens, I hope to continue to build on relationships with them.  I want to continue in the relationships and conversations started last year to see how they are doing now. And I also hope to be a welcoming presence to any new teens attending our VBS and class this year in order to present the Gospel to them.

I was led to go on this trip by praying about the trip.  I felt that through my past experiences, I can relate to the teens pretty well and they can also relate to my own struggles.

It would be great if you prayed for my spiritual walk during these next few weeks.  It has been hard for me during the semester to really connect with God well and so I really want these next few weeks to be a time to reflect.  Also, please pray for my physical health as I was sick for the past week. I had a high fever and hopefully it does not come back anytime soon or even in Arizona.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 17

Day 17: Katrina Wong
Senior, UCI

Missions Information
June 26 - July 10
Location: St. Louis, MO (WLS) &
Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

My team will be going to two places: Missouri and Arizona. In Missouri, we will be attending a conference specifically for Native Americans across the country called Warrior Leadership Summit. We will be going with the Navajos that we usually see in Arizona and we will be acting as leaders to their group by guiding them through small groups, mentoring them, and attending the conference with them. Then we will fly over to Arizona and join the rest of the team to hold a VBS for the Navajo there through Twin Mesa Bible Church. We will be playing games, leading worship, sharing the gospel, and just hanging out with them.

I want to invite you to partner with me in this missions trip. Our team is definitely going to need prayer. Here are some things you can be praying for us about:

  • PERSEVERANCE to continue even when we’re tired or discouraged
  • BOLDNESS to share and connect with the Navajos/ to step out of our comfort zones
  • TEAM UNITY and continued encouragement and support of one another
  • ENERGY throughout the entire trip

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 18

Day 18: Jonny Lee
Freshman, UCI

Missions Information
July 3 - July 10
Location: Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

In Arizona, I'll be leading a small group for the Navajo teens class during a Vacation Bible School at a local church on the reservation. I went to Arizona last year and felt like there was more to be done with the teens that I met there last year. I didn't feel like I had done all that I could do and I wanted to pour into the teens lives again, so I decided to come back this year.

Pray for safety physically and spiritually. Pray for the hearts of the kids to be receptive. Pray for the Holy Spirit to speak through me and not trust so much in myself.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 19

Day 19: Cyrus Lai
Freshman, UCR

Missions Information
June 26 - July 10
Location: St. Louis, MO (WLS) &
Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

The purpose of this trip is to further develop long lasting relationships with the Navajo and learn more about their culture. Our hope is that we will be able to raise up leaders for Christ among the Navajos whom we are attending this Christian conference with. After the conference in Missouri we will go to help with the yearly High School Missionary Team Vacation Bible School in Arizona, where we will hopefully co-lead a small group with a Navajo from the conference.

Please pray for spiritual preparedness to be ready against any of Satan's attacks, safety throughout the various traveling for the trip, energy to be keep going on for two week duration, open hearts of the team and Navajos that we will be ministering to, and rain--both physical and spiritual.

Lift Off! Month of Missionaries (2016) - Day 21

Day 21: Daniel Lew
Senior, UCI

Missions Information
June 26 - July 10
Location: St. Louis, MO (WLS) &
Hard Rock, AZ (Navajo Reservation)
Organization: FCBC

The first week of my trip this year will actually be spent in Missouri at the Warrior Leadership Summit (WLS), a Christian conference for Native teens and young adults. Along with five other First Chinese Baptist Church college students, I will be acting as a counselor for the group of Navajos I will be serving the following week. This is a new experience for me and I’m excited for the opportunity to understand their culture more completely and spend more time with them out there. The second week will be spent on the Reservation in Arizona along with the High School Missionary Team of FCBC as we spend time with the people out there and holding a Vacation Bible School with messages, worship, and small groups.

Please support me in your prayers. Every time I make a trip to the Reservation I’m able to see God work in the lives of the people out there. So please pray that God would continue to do His work as we spread His love and salvation.
