Lift Off! Easter - Day 01

Day 01: Resurrection Sunday!
Reading: Mark 16:1-19; Acts 2:14-41

The followers of Jesus were mourning. Their beloved leader was dead, lying in a sealed tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, came to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. But the tomb was open. Jesus was not there! An angel of God told the women that Jesus Christ was alive. He had risen! And they were to tell the disciples and Peter to go to Galilee, where they would see Jesus for themselves. Jesus then appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. And He appeared to two others on the road in the country. All who had seen Jesus told His disciples that He was alive, but they refused to believe it. Finally, Jesus Himself appeared before the disciples. It was true. Their Lord was really alive! Jesus spoke with His disciples, commissioning them to go and preach the gospel so that all who hear would believe and be saved.

  • Could someone who was dead really come to life again?? Imagine the shock of the women and the disciples when they saw Jesus standing before them, alive and well! If Jesus had not risen from the dead, then all who believe in Jesus would be fools. Christianity would be a mockery. Faith in Christ would be in vain. But it IS true… Jesus IS alive! And because He is alive, we have been delivered from our sins and can have a relationship with Almighty God. Give thanks for this marvelous truth. Celebrate the resurrection of Jesus! It is truly Good News!
  • In Mark 16:7, the angel told Mary Magdalene and Mary to tell His disciples and Peter to go to Galilee, where the risen Jesus would meet them. Wasn’t Peter also one of the disciples? Why was his name mentioned? Could it be that Jesus knew the remorse that Peter felt when he had denied knowing Jesus three times? Out of love, Jesus especially wanted Peter to know that He was alive. Seeing Jesus again and knowing that Jesus had forgiven him of his wrongdoing brought Peter out of despair, ready to serve His Lord. He and the other disciples were commissioned by Jesus to share the gospel. In the Acts 2 passage, Peter spoke boldly of Jesus and His resurrection from the dead. As a result of hearing Peter’s preaching, 3,000 believed and were baptized!

Perhaps, like Peter, you have failed Jesus in some way. And maybe you have not forgiven yourself for this failure. If you have acknowledged what you have done wrong before God, be assured that you are forgiven. Ask God to help you to forgive yourself for whatever you have done wrong. And believe with confidence, that in spite of past failures, God can use you to do great things for Him. He used Peter, and He can certainly use you.

Lift Off! Easter - Day 02

Day 02: Black Saturday
Reading: Psalm 22:1-31; Romans 8:24-39

On this day, Jesus lay dead in the total darkness of a sealed tomb. Those who followed Him were in despair. What would happen to them?  What would they live for?  In their minds and hearts, all was lost. They were dejected and without hope. Little did they know that this was not the end. The darkness would not last. The silence brought about by the death of Jesus was about to erupt in a shout of victory and bring eternal life to all who would believe in Him.

  • When God is silent, we might believe He is distant from us. We may not hear Him and we may not see Him, but He is present. He is actively working on our behalf. Do you believe this? Or are you impatient with God because it seems as if He is not answering your prayers? Ask God to help you to wait and trust that He is working on your behalf.
  • Pray for those in our community who are still in darkness, separated from God. Pray that the Light would shine in their hearts so they would come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Lift Off! Easter - Day 03

Day 03: Good Friday
Reading: Mark 15:1-47; 1 Peter 2:13-25

On this day, Jesus was publicly humiliated as He stood trial for crimes he never committed. He endured accusations, ridicule, insults and torture. Jesus, being innocent of all charges against Him, was condemned to a horrific death on this dark day. But Jesus was no ordinary man. He was the Son of God, who took our place on the cross so that our fellowship with God would be restored. The blood that Jesus shed cleansed us and set us free from all our sins… past, present and future. The sacrifice He made gave us freedom from eternal damnation. He died for our good. As a result, we can live in righteousness, healed by the wounds He bore for us.

  • All of us deserve the penalty of death, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23) But we were spared from this penalty because Jesus took our place on the cross.  Reflect on what He has done for you. Give thanks for His unconditional and sacrificial love.
  • The passage in 1 Peter reminds us that what Christ suffered for us was to be our example, so that we might die to sin and follow in His footsteps. He submitted to the will of the Father. Are you submissive, even when you are treated unfairly? Are you willing to sacrifice, even if it means you need to deny yourself so that others might benefit?

Lift Off! Easter - Day 04

Day 04: Thursday
Reading: Mark 14:12-72; Hebrews 5:7-10

On this day, Jesus and His disciples shared the Passover meal together. It was the first communion. After dinner, they went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray, but the disciples could not stay awake. Once Jesus’ time of prayer was over, Judas Iscariot carried out the betrayal, and Jesus was arrested. Standing before His accusers and the high priest, Jesus endured false testimonies of wrongdoing, but He said nothing to defend Himself. Jesus understood the fate that God had prepared for Him, and He was obedient to the Father’s will. Sadly, all of his supporters and followers had scattered. None stood by to defend him. Even Peter denied knowing Jesus three times, just as Jesus prophesied he would do.

  • Peter loved Jesus. And yet Peter failed. He denied knowing Jesus, denied being one of His followers. Peter said he would never deny knowing Jesus. It must have shocked Peter himself when he heard the rooster crow after the third time he denied knowing Jesus. Imagine the shame Peter felt, the guilt that overwhelmed him. He had betrayed his Lord, his Friend. Often, our actions speak louder than our words. We say we want to live for Jesus, and yet there are things we do that cause us to “blend in” with the world rather than distinguish ourselves as followers of Christ. Are there things you have done that you regret? Have your actions shamed Jesus in any way? Confess before Him now. He will forgive you, just as He forgave Peter.
  • The passage in Hebrews 5 tells us that when Jesus prayed, He asked God to deliver Him from death. The amazing thing is that in v. 8, we discover that Jesus “learned obedience from the things which He suffered.” Jesus had to learn to obey and submit to the Father’s will for Him to die on the cross for all of us. Obedience is not always easy. It may require suffering. It may mean enduring hardship. What challenge are you facing at this time? Talk to God about it. Ask Him for strength to endure. Learn obedience in the circumstances you are in.

Lift Off! Easter - Day 05

Day 05: Wednesday
Reading: Mark 14:1-11; Philippians 2:5-13

On this day, Jesus spent time with friends in Bethany. The night before, at a dinner gathering hosted by these friends, a woman brought an alabaster vial of expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus’ head. Those who saw this thought it was a waste and scolded her. But Jesus, knowing that He would be facing death on the cross just a few days later, praised the woman for this generous act of love and devotion. At this same gathering, Judas Iscariot made the decision to betray Jesus. Jesus knew Judas would betray Him, yet He did nothing to stop this betrayal. For it was His ultimate fate to die on the cross for the sins of the world, an unselfish act of love for all of us.

  • The woman who broke the alabaster vial for Jesus was bold in declaring her love for the Lord. She lavished Him with worship with this jar of perfume.  How lavish is your worship of Jesus? What is holding you back from freely worshipping Him?  Spend some time worshipping Him now.
  • Jesus was determined to be obedient to the will of His father, even if it meant death. Is there something that God wants you to do that you have not followed through with? Confess this to Him now. Ask for His help. He is faithful and will give you the courage to do what you need to do.

Lift Off! Easter - Day 06

Day 06: Tuesday
Reading: Mark 11:20-24; Mark 13:1-13

On this day, Jesus spoke with His disciples about faith. The fig tree that was cursed the day before became withered at the roots, no longer able to produce fruit, thus fulfilling what Jesus had pronounced upon it. He used this incident to teach the disciples to have faith in God… to believe that God can answer any request they ask of Him. Later that day, on the Mount of Olives, Jesus spoke of the things to come… a time of war and strife, a time when many would rise to speak false things in the name of Jesus, a time when believers would be persecuted for their faith. Jesus encouraged the disciples to be faithful to endure to the end, trusting God to give them what they need to persevere.

  • Do you believe that God answers your prayers? It may not always be the way that you want Him to, but He does answer with what He thinks is best for the circumstances and situations you pray for. Ask God to give you more faith as you pray to Him.
  • The passage in Mark 13 speaks of what is happening in our world today. Wars and heinous acts of violence are occurring in many places. Christians are increasingly being persecuted, even martyred for their faith. The level of persecution is rising even here in the United States. What will you do if you are asked to suppress, or even renounce your faith in God?  Will you be faithful to Him?

Lift Off! Easter - Day 07

Day 07: Monday
Reading: Isaiah 56:1-7; Mark 11:12-19

On this day, Jesus and His disciples passed a fig tree on their way to the temple. Jesus looked for fruit on the tree but found none. So Jesus spoke to the tree and said, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” When they arrived at the temple, they saw a flurry of activity. The crowds were buying and selling, engaging in everything but spiritual activity. No one offered prayer, no one was being ministered to or encouraged. The place was barren of any spiritual fruit. In anger, Jesus put a halt to what was going on, overturning the tables and reminding the people that the temple was to be a “house of prayer.”

  • Prayer is powerful and essential to a vibrant spiritual life. In Isaiah 56:7, the Lord says, “My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.” Is prayer a priority in your life? What do you need to do make time to commune with God?
  • Jesus cursed the fig tree for not bearing fruit. And when He got to the temple, Jesus was angered because no one was engaging in any fruitful spiritual activity. Are you living a fruitful spiritual life?  What are you doing to advance the Kingdom of God? Are you intentional in being a blessing to others?

Lift Off! Easter - Day 08

Day 08: Palm Sunday
Reading: Psalm 118:18-26; Mark 11:1-11

On this day, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on the back of a young donkey. Crowds of people were gathered around Him, shouting “Hosanna!” What were they saying when they shouted this? The English word hosanna came from the Greek word for hosanna. The Greek word was the phonetic spelling of the Hebrew phrase, hoshiya na, which means, “Help, save me!” This Hebrew phrase appears only once in the Bible, in Psalm 118:25. This was followed in v. 26 with the exclamation, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” From the era of the Old Testament to the New Testament, the meaning of hosanna changed. When Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the shouts of “Hosanna!” meant, “Salvation has come!  Hooray!” It was a shout of praise to the One who brings salvation!

  • Reflect on the time when you received Jesus as Lord and Savior. Offer up “Hosanna!” to Him with gratitude for what He has done for you.
  • Think of someone you know who needs salvation. Pray that the Good News of Jesus would touch that person and bring him into a relationship with God.

Lift Off! Easter - Day 09

Day 09: Faith
Reading: Romans 4

"If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless." (Rom 4:14 NLT)

From this passage, we see that Abraham's faith and hope rested on God's promise for him to be a great nation. Even when Abraham couldn't see what was to come, he believed and put his faith in God. Today as we recall and remember the cross, we may not have witnessed it first hand, but our hope should be in the one who died and rose again. As an example, Abraham believed God and "it was credited to him as righteousness." (v.22) What more with our faith today in Christ for our salvation and right standing with God!

  • Praise God for the opportunity to have faith in Him, our Redeemer.
  • Pray that you may have greater faith today and this season as we focus on Christ.
  • Pray for the faith of others who you know need it to move ahead. Or for those who don't have it and need to know.

Lift Off! Easter - Day 10

Day 10: Mercy
Reading: Psalm 51

Read through this passage a few times and chew on each of the important verbs the psalmist describes: wash, purify, create, restore, deliver. They are such powerful words and statements of a promise that God continues to forgive and bring restoration to our lives everyday. Hold on to these truths this season--we cannot escape God's immeasurable grace. How much more in this season! Give God your fears, desires, and especially sins; He can and will forgive in His unending mercy.

  • Use this time to pray over your life and some of the sins/struggles you need forgiveness for.
  • Seriously pray through each sin one by one and hand them over to His forgiving grace.
  • Pray v.17 and ask for a broken spirit and contrite heart. This is asking for a desire for permanent change.
  • Pray for freedom in any sins you are trapped in.

Lift Off! - Easter Season

3...2...1...Lift Off! [Mar 27 - Apr 05]
10 DAYS, 10 REQUESTS, 10 MINUTES
We're kicking off another Lift Off! prayer campaign and our focus will be on the Easter season. As we approach the death and resurrection of Christ, we will be praying over 10 aspects of the cross. The first 3 days will cover some broad aspects in preparation and once we get to Palm Sunday (Mar 29), we'll pickup the same devotionals as the church in remembrance of Holy Week (the last days of Jesus on earth). Let's come together not only in celebration for the life sacrificed for us, but also pray for those who need to hear this important message!

Don't forget...
Lift Off! is an aspect of Flight Ministry that encourages participants to pray. Over 10 days, we will be presenting 10 prayer requests that we ask you to pray over for 10 (solid) minutes. Lift Off! presents 10 areas of prayer that may include specific people, ministries, or aspects of growth. It is meant to be a blast of encouragement and intercession by a committed group of people over the course of 10 days. Keep an eye out, the countdown begins soon...
