WLS+AZ Missions (2016) - Day(s) After

Question I ask myself for the past 4 years as an HSMT counselor: "Why, oh why, do I subject myself as a 47-year-old man to conditions such as: sleeping in a tent, outhouses, showering only twice a week, etc.?"

Answer:  “For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭9:19-23‬ ‭NASB

Blessings:
Meals and snacks catered by the Koomprapuns and Elaine Cheng, which included probably the best Otter Pop I've ever eaten
Surprising but divine conversations with Navajo family members throughout the week of VBS and with complete strangers who asked for prayer while watching fireworks on July 4th
Hearing courageous testimonies from Navajo Christians and an FCBC collegian at WLS and VBS
Providing co-laborers and familiar faces from home to help me in my transition from WLS to Arizona
A few uninterrupted 15-minute dumps in 1 of only 2 outhouses shared by 30+ guys
The eagerness of the high school freshmen
Answered prayers of unity for WLS team and smooth transition to Arizona
A well-received prayer tour, where we drove to different parts of the reservation to pray (and for some, nap)

Stretching moments:
Coming with not only 1, but 2, messages for the Navajo teens
Hearing constructive criticism from not meeting expectations, resulting in thoughts of failing the WLS team in my preparing them

“For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭51:16-17‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Lessons learned:
Assess needs first; don't come in assuming we know what the Navajos' needs are
The Navajo have just as much to teach us about faith as we them, if not more so; we as missionaries ought not come onto the missions field thinking we're superior, we have something to offer, and we know better.
Hard rock is in the middle of the Navajo reservation, which makes the residents even more rural and isolated, thereby more traditional

WLS+AZ Missions (2016) - Day 13

Hey everybody,

We have definitely seen God working these past two weeks. At the beginning of our WLS trip, the Navajo were talking about not wanting to attend VBS. Now, at the end of VBS, one of the Navajos that initially said she was not coming shared her testimony in front of the whole teens class. She explained how she is fighting for her faith despite adversity from tradition and family. Another Navajo even participated in leading worship with Katrina.

Despite seeing God working in all these things, I’m honestly pretty disappointed. At the beginning of the week, not many teen boys showed up. Things started looking up as the attendance for the guys swelled in the middle of the week. But yesterday, the last day, the guys in my small group didn’t come. I know God is present and working, but I am still struggling with why God did this.

During praise night, one of the high schoolers thanked God for using us despite our weakness. This resonated with me as I recognize that I lack faith. After some reflection, God showed me that He not only uses us, but He strengthens us while doing it. He knows my faith is weak, so He is building it through this trial. God is good.

Yesterday and today, counselors have been stressing that this mission goes beyond the week on the reservation; it includes the 51 other weeks of the year. Please pray that we would be building and maintaining the relationships with the Navajos that budded this week despite the distractions and busyness that come with returning home. Please also pray for the cliche but much needed traveling mercy as we are heading home tomorrow.

WLS+AZ Missions (2016) - Day 10

Yá'át'ééh everyone!
The team and I have been serving for a while now, and I’ve honestly lost track of how many days have passed. This week we have been blessed to attend a 4th of July celebration with several Navajo families. Through the lens of WLS I have been able to learn and appreciate Navajo culture more. This morning I was able to witness the slaughtering of a lamb for food by our Navajo hosts. Along with being very interesting, it also made the image of Jesus Christ as the lamb of God more real to me. This trip has been very edifying and I feel like I understand the plight of the Navajo more completely.

Through the week of WLS and this week of Arizona, I have learned more about trusting in God. Before this trip I felt very unqualified and inadequate but God provided by opening up the hearts of my Navajo cabin mates and sustaining me through my tiredness this week. Truly, I have come to appreciate the meaning of this hymn all the more:
“Great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness Lord unto me”

God has been faithful to me in providing work according to my ability. Even though I did not lead extraordinary cabin times at WLS, God provided by making even the closed off people share deeply. God also allowed me to get close to one Navajo named Troy and share in his spiritual walk. This week in Arizona God has also provided all that I have needed in terms of energy and wisdom to lead small groups in the Teens class. I sincerely believe that God has strengthened me beyond my abilities this trip, and I am grateful for this opportunity to serve.

Praise God as there have been less cars stuck this year and other interferences. Please pray for our team as many of us are being attacked by tiredness and sickness. There are only two days left for VBS, so pray that God will show his glory and power through them. God is good!

WLS+AZ Missions - Day 9

Happy (Belated) 4th of July everyone!

We’re all doing well! Very tired, but healthy and all looking forward to what God has in store for us over the next few days. We are currently on our second day of VBS out here on the Navajo Reservation out here in Arizona, so let me catch you up on what we’ve been doing.

Friday and Saturday were our travel days as we made our way from Roach, Missouri—where the WLS conference was being held—all the way to Twin Mesa Bible Church on the Reservation. Around 2pm on Friday we said our goodbyes to the friends we had made during the camp and drove back to St. Louis for a quick look at the famous arch and some delicious BBQ. After a layover in Minnesota we finally made it to Phoenix for a hotel night stay and then met up with the HSMTers the following morning.

Sunday morning we got to join Twin Mesa Bible Church for their regular Sunday service. Then we went out to the surrounding areas, greeting to old friends and inviting everyone we could find to our VBS. For me, as tired as I may be feeling right now, it feels great to be out here on the reservation after 2 years. The kids are all much taller and and the high schoolers all seem a little bit younger, but the Reservation hasn’t changed at all. The night sky and the land is as beautiful as ever and I find myself in familiar moments like washing dishes outside behind the house in the hot sun or brushing my teeth at night looking up at the Milky Way.

Monday night was one of the most special moments I feel like I’ve had out here on the Reservation even after going on this trip so many times. We were invited out to the softball field 10 minutes from where we’re camping out to join the extended Yazzie family for a giant 4th of July Celebration. There was softball, a massive spread of delicious food (fry bread included), and an awesome fireworks display you can only experience out here on the Reservation. Something felt so right about seeing Navajo elders and kids alike fellowshipping with those of us from LA at a level of comfortability we usually only get to by the end of the week. For me, the night was full of joy and assured me that this is exactly where I want to and need to be.

For us on the WLS team, this is our second week of missions. Friday felt like finishing up a missions trip as we left the Warrior Leadership Summit, but here we are back in Arizona for Day 1 of VBS. Please pray against weariness and pray that we’d get that second wave of energy that can only come from God. We’re helping out the teens class as small group leaders so pray that God will give us words to say and that we would know how to introduce these youth to God or help them on their journeys of faith. And pray that we would glorify God in our actions and in the relationship we build out here.

WLS+AZ Missions - Day 6

HELLO FROM THE REZ!!
We have just finished our first part of our missions trip in WLS. The past week flew by so fast and we are now in Hard Rock, Arizona. Yesterday, we flew in from St. Louis to Phoenix. Today, we spent the day debriefing and just trying to get our thoughts together. This past week was definitely very stretching, both physically and spiritually. I think in the beginning of the week, we were still trying to figure out our role at WLS—were we there to be their friend or counselor?
The second night of WLS, Katlyn and I were asked to lead cabin time and while we initially felt discouraged that the girls were not focused the way that we wanted them to be, we soon realized that it was part of their culture and they weren’t necessarily being disrespectful. It was so encouraging to hear the girls in our cabin share and be vulnerable to one another, even in the midst of two strangers who were leading the time of sharing. Overall, the past week was good in that we were able to build relationships with the Navajo and to better understand their beliefs and culture. As in any missions trips, there were struggles and discouraging moments. This moment came near the end of our time in Missouri. During a time of debriefing, we learned that one of the Navajo leaders felt that our team was not meeting expectations. While we are not against criticism, we felt that we were doing what God wanted us to do. So, it was hard to hear someone tell us the way in which we were ministering to the Navajo was wrong. It was so easy to feel like giving up and just hardening of our hearts, especially as the week was coming to an end.

Despite a rough end to the week, we were able to appreciate being able to live with the Navajo and being immersed into their lives. This week, I learned the reality of the pain and abuse that these people go through and the overall effect of the never-ending cycles of abuse. We were also able to see how early drinking and drug use started in the lives of the Navajos and also how these people are very much like our (Chinese) culture in that they show a great amount of respect of the older generation.  Being able to spend the week with the Navajo, we were able to have more “organic” conversations with them versus squishing whatever conversations we could have in the short couple of hours of VBS on the Rez.

I personally learned that despite telling myself to be uncomfortable, I’m not good at actually being uncomfortable. I learned that it’s hard for me to let God take control and to have faith. I think the most spiritually challenging part of WLS was remembering to find rest in God and not to rely on myself for strength. It’s so easy to be caught up in doing God’s work and pouring into His people and to forget to allow God to pour into me. So far, I’ve learned that there is always a bigger picture when it comes to mission. We often time get caught up in looking for immediate and tangible fruit from our work and forget that our role may be to simply sow seeds and build relationships. I also learned that pray is so important and is so powerful.

So as we begin the next part of our missions trip, please pray for:
1. Strength and Energy: I think I can speak for most, if not all, of our team members when I say that we are tired. Please pray for renewal of physical strength and also for spiritual strength. Please pray that we will continue to seek that energy and strength from God through prayer and through quiet times.
2. Humility: I think through this week, I feel that a lot of the discouragement that I felt from being criticized came from pride in myself. Please pray that throughout this next week, we would humbly seek after God’s will.
3. Unity: When we are not united, it makes it so much easier for the enemy to come after us and to successfully attack us. Please pray that we will be united as we do the Lord’s work.
4. Spiritual Protection: Please pray that we would feel the Lord’s presence here and that He would bind Satan’s hands. Spiritual warfare is so real, especially with the Native people because they are so in touch with the spiritual realm. Please pray for protection for the team and also the Navajo attending our VBS.

Thank you for continuing to support us!
-Melissa

WLS+AZ Missions 2016 - Day 3

Hi friends!
We've made it to Missouri and to WLS! Just to give you guys an idea of what it's like here. The weather is hot and humid so we're constantly sweating and sticky. There's a ton of people here from all parts of the country and from many different tribes. We've been meeting a lot of new people and striking up conversations as we wait in line for food or wait for sessions to start. As a team we are split up among the cabins of the Navajos that came out from Hardrock, AZ acting as their counselors. We have been trying to immerse ourselves into the routine of the Navajos and being intentional with the time that we spend with them whether that's just walking to worship or during small group times. In the past day and a half we've been here we have been going to worship sessions, messages, workshops and learning more about the Native American culture through these things. Knowing more of their culture helps us to better serve them and understand them. We've been learning in a very real context the weight of the struggles that Native Americans go through and how desperately they need the hope of Jesus.

One of my highlights from the past couple of days was that Hiram, Ernest, and I got to play in the 3 on 3 tournament during free time. It was a good time playing ball and getting to meet more natives through basketball. It seems like all Natives play ball but we ended up getting 3rd place. Woohoo!

There are a few things that our team has been struggling with and could use prayer. First, collectively, we have been pretty tired throughout the whole day so prayer for more energy, alertness, and strength. Secondly, our team is still trying to figure out how to navigate through the conference and in interacting with the Navajos. For example, knowing how much to intervene with their friend groups or when to let them do their own thing. The trip has been good so far! We're excited for what else is in store and for more relationships to be made and deepened. Thanks for your prayers and stay tuned for more!

-Katrina

WLS+AZ Missions 2016 - Day 0

Hola!
Greetings from FCBC lol. I'm writing this with T-4 hours away from heading to Missouri! OMG is this actually happening? I can't believe that we are leaving today. As a team, it sounds like a lot of us are really nervous about WLS. For those of you that didn't know, WLS stands for Warrior Leadership Summit. It is basically a Native American Christian conference where different tribes from around the country come to learn about Jesus. A group of collegians have been called to go minister and walk alongside some of the Navajo that will be attending this conference. Our goal during the first week of the trip is to find a Navajo teen that is willing to lead a small group with each of us during the week of VBS in Arizona with HSMT (High School Missionary Team). Our WLS team includes: Katrina, Daniel, Melissa, Ernest, Cyrus, and myself (Katlyn).

During the second week of our trip we will be working with the HSMT on the Navajo reservation. During our time there, we will be teaching a VBS class of teens, leading them in small groups, worshipping God with some new songs, and reflecting God's love to them.

Some prayer requests that the team include:
1. Boldness to be able to talk to the people that we encounter there, to really see them through God's eyes and love on them with God's love.
2. Team unity to rely on each other when our energy runs out and openness to come to each other when we need support and prayer.
3. Energy throughout the week. Since the trip is 2 weeks long, pray that when we are feeling tired that we would continue to lean on God's strength.

Keep up with us here as we'll post updates throughout our trip!

**Update 8 hrs later:
We've landed! After a 2-hour delay, we're in Missouri and ready for some sleep!
