Lent Devotions: Week 6

Lent is a season of preparation for Easter. It is a time to intentionally humble ourselves, repent of our sins, and turn ourselves to God. Lent should not be a time of boasting of one’s sacrifice or trying to earn God’s favor or His love. God’s love for us could not be any greater than it already is. This is a season to identify with Jesus by actively turning from our ways and pursuing the way of Christ.

This year, we encourage our FCBC family to practice Lent together by joining the 40 Days of Spiritual Breakthrough:
  1. Consider fasting (giving up something) for the duration of the 40 days. For example, lunch everyday or sweets for 40 days or television/media, etc. Fasting allows us to uncover our need for God and to instead, turn to God to supply our needs. It is a physical action with a spiritual intention.
  2. Set aside time to read, reflect, and pray with the weekly devotional.
  3. Missed previous prayer weeks? You can find them here.

REACHING OUT
-------------------

DAY 36
READ Mark 16:15
Then He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

REFLECT
What is the difference between the Matt. 28:19-20 and Mark 16:15 version of the Great Commission? Are we truly carrying out the Great Commission if we only emphasize the “discipleship” part?

PRAY
Lord, help me not to use the need for more Bible knowledge as an “excuse” to not share the gospel.

-------------------

DAY 37
READ Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.

REFLECT
Do you think God sees you as being ashamed of the gospel in front of nonbelievers?

PRAY
Lord, please help me to be bold in initiating spiritual conversations via email or other means with my non-Christian friends during this difficult time of global pandemic.

-------------------

DAY 38
READ 1 Corinthians 9:16
For if I preach the gospel, I have no reason to boast, because I am compelled to preach — and woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

REFLECT
Do you really believe “woe to me” if you do not evangelize? If not, why not?

PRAY
Lord, please help me clearly see the bad consequences of not evangelizing.

-------------------

DAY 39
READ Mark 10:29-30
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said, “there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the sake of the gospel, who will not receive a hundred times more, now at this time — houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions — and eternal life in the age to come.

REFLECT
This passage is about the cost of following Christ. Have you ever paid attention to the words “and for the sake of the gospel?” Have you neglected your role in spreading the gospel as you try to follow Christ?

PRAY
Lord, help me be willing to pay the price for spreading the gospel.

-------------------

DAY 40
READ 1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

REFLECT
Are you prepared to defend your faith to nonbelievers? If not, how can you prepare better this year?

PRAY
Lord, help me be proactive in equipping myself to answer questions about my faith. May I be ready with an answer that gives You great glory.

-------------------

DAY 41
READ Acts 5:42
Every day in the temple, and in various homes, they continued teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

REFLECT
What is the significance of proclaiming the gospel in various homes? What can I learn from that?

PRAY
Lord, help me to open my own home for the purpose of bringing others to Christ.

-------------------

DAY 42
READ Colossians 1:28
We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

REFLECT
What does “with all wisdom” mean to you personally? How can you translate this instruction into action?

PRAY
Lord, please give me innovative and creative ideas to share the gospel with those around me.
