COACH Ministry Q & A

What is Coach?
Coach is a summer ministry pairing mentors with students to advance spiritual growth, study the basic tenets of the Christian faith and supply prayer. This is called discipleship. Generally, upperclassmen will mentor lowerclassmen, with some young adults/adults also helping out. (Each pair is single gender.) Our hope is to create an atmosphere that gets us out of our comfort zones, ensures deep fellowship, and produces God-glorifying relationships.

What is discipleship? And why is it important?
Discipleship is a relationship between teacher and student with the purpose of growing to become more and more like Christ. The ultimate goal of any discipleship relationship is to develop Christians that will flourish and be followers that would be faithful to walking in the ways of Lord and be equipped to share Christ.

What should I expect?
Spiritual conversation and walking alongside a fellow Christian who can encourage you to be more Christ like. Fellowship is a part of Coach, but the goal isn’t to become BFFs. (Although we won’t discourage that if you two hit it off.)

What will we do during meet ups?
First, introduce yourselves if you don't know each other -- job/school/life status, who you like, last time you cried, least favorite body part, etc. You know, basic facts about you. Maybe share your salvation story -- how has God worked in your life? What is He teaching you? What are some of your challenges?

Once you got that down, the discipler will guide the relationship and decide what subject, book, and/or application to study throughout these meet-ups. We’ll write three devotionals that you can both go over together. Make sure to spend a little bit of time praying for one another as well. Disciplers should also not be afraid to ask where their disciplee would like grow spiritually and always allow for feedback through their meet-ups.

Where should we meet?
Boba shops, fro yo, parks, coffee houses, etc. Basically anywhere comfortable with minimal noise level and is conducive for conversation.

How often should we meet?
At least three times throughout the summer Five if you're ambitious. Feel free to meet even more often if you really bond. See below for more deets on the loyalty card, but don't let the rewards dictate how many times you meet! Longevity should be the goal in these relationships, so feel free to move beyond this program, the summer time, and rewards system. We hope to have opportunities from older, wiser Christians to speak truth into their disciplees to build relationship towards Jesus Christ.

I’ve never discipled or mentored anyone before. Will there be training?
There will not be a formal training session. Hopefully, the devotionals will be a helpful starting point in your relationship. Just remember that as the discipler you are guiding this relationship -- deciding what book to read, where to meet up, etc. That also means that as the leader, you set an example. Sharing will go as deep as you share. Praying will happen when you initiate it.

How does the loyalty card work?
Coach pairs can join an incentives program by picking up a "Frequent Meet-Up Card"-- think boba-drink stamp card! (In fact, it looks exactly like a boba drink stamp card.) Three meet-ups earns a free drink. (Paid for by Flight.) Five meet-ups earns a free meal. (Also paid for by Flight.)  Proof of meet-up requires a posted picture to the Flight Facebook group (or Instagram @fcbc_flight) with #fcbccoachsummer2018 attached. 1 stamp per meet-up. 1 card per student. Offer valid from May 25, 2018 through September 15, 2018.

How OFTEN do we need to post our meet-ups?
Just post to the Facebook group or Instagram at least once for each prize (one for your 3rd meet-up and one for your 5th meet-up). No need to post EVERY TIME you meet--unless you want to and just want to keep track of your meet-ups, we don’t mind! When you ask for stamps, just let the person know how many times you’ve met and they’ll stamp appropriately--we trust you!

What happens when summer ends?
Feel free to keep meeting (if you both agree to it). Our ultimate goal is that this kicks off an exciting ministry that will help open the door towards a full-fledged discipleship program with other age groups in the church. Disciplers should give the option to continue meeting beyond the scope of this summer. If there are no wishes to continue, don't worry, we'll try this again the following year. If at anytime either party feels the relationship isn't working, please let us know.
