Lift Off! - Task Unfinished

A few weeks back, we had the opportunity in Passage as a part of the Missions Expo to hear from two missionaries: “Wally”, a missionary with the International Mission Board (IMB)'s East Asia affinity group and Tommy, a volunteer staffer with OMF. If you missed their testimonies and sharing, here’s a quick recap!

Wally:
There is much to be done in this unfinished task of bringing the good news of the gospel to the peoples of the world. There is a need for our churches to be proactively involved with evangelizing, discipling, planting, and multiplying healthy churches, and training indigenous leaders among unreached peoples and places for the glory of God.

Tommy:
"And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do." - John 17:3-4

As I've learned more about God and His passion for His glory, He gave me John 17:3-4 to remind me that it isn't about romanticized visions of faraway places, but about knowing Him and making Him known wherever He has placed me. Though I might not yet be directed overseas, I'm still commanded to go and make disciples of all nations, and that can even be here in the US. It's about learning to maximize the life I live for His glory, not mine. It's about leveraging the work, finances, time, living situations, passions, and skills for the glory of God. This is all done out of a love relationship with Him that begins here on earth and will last until eternity, and what better time and place to start, then right now where He has placed us!

Twenty years ago, East Asia was considered an urgent frontier for the gospel. Christians focused much of their time, money, and prayers toward getting the good news into some of the most restrictive places in the world. Today, the fruits of their sacrifice are evident. Many unengaged, unreached people groups (UUPGs) have heard about Jesus, and communities are changing as the number of believers grows. However, there is still much work to be done. There are still 218 UUPGs—six million people—in East Asia who need the gospel. One essential way God is going to accomplish this work is through the prayers of his people. Since the IMB started publishing East Asia UUPG prayer guides five years ago, seventy-eight groups have been engaged with the gospel. Prayer is an indisputable element of that accomplishment.

“Go and make disciples of all nations…”
-Jesus, Matthew 28:19 (The Great Commission)

“The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed”
-James Hudson Taylor

Missions exists because worship does not. Worship does not exist when the glory of God is not know. The Bible is telling us one single story, from Genesis to Revelation; that story is of God’s glory. He has an end goal which he has been purposefully working towards since the very beginning of time, and we actually play a strategic part in it! Over the next 10 days, we’re going to walk through the story of God’s glory and explore our role in God’s story. Accompanying that, each day we will be praying for a different UUPG. The hope is to explore and grow a heart for unengaged and unreached as well as intentionally pray as a church for God to perhaps lead us to adopt one of these UUPG’s.

Hope you'll spend the next 10 days praying for these special groups of people who need to hear the Gospel.
