Lift Off! 40 Days of Sacrifice - Day 05

Day 05: Thirsting

John 19:28-30
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty." A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

John 19:28 says that in Jesus’ final moments, He said, “I am thirsty.” While drawing His last breaths, Jesus was intentional with what He said. In fact, the Bible shows us that everything Jesus did and said throughout His life was intentional. Knowing that, what else could He have meant when He said He was thirsty? He was fulfilling the prophecy from the Old Testament to let everyone know that He truly was the Son of God—the only one who can satisfy our longings.

Matthew 5:6 tells us the Kingdom of Heaven is about craving a relationship with God. Without Christ, you’re hungry and thirsty. But after you meet Him and accept Him as your Savior, He quenches your inner hunger and thirst. Jesus thirsts, to connect with us—to share in our human sufferings and longings for our Creator. When Jesus said He was thirsty, it was more about reminding us what He could give us, than what He actually needed.

Pray that our satisfaction and longings in this world would be fulfilled solely in Jesus Christ. It's so easy to let circumstances, events, and disasters to distract us from desiring only Jesus. May He be our purpose and will--to please Him and live for Him. Pray also that the great yearnings for answers and peace of the refugees would also be found in Christ. As they seek for a home, may they also seek and find a Savior who will satisfy their spiritual needs.
